Learn more about the difference between Private Lessons and Group Lessons and the benefits of both.

By Kathy Morrison

Do you have a student that is interested in music lessons? At Kathy’s Music we offer music lessons for students and adults with options for group lessons or private lessons.

While private lessons are ideal for older students and adults, we offer a series of group lessons that create a strong foundation in music as well as instrumental/vocal instruction.

Consider these factors as you evaluate how to get started with the best experience for your student.

How old is the student?

Private lessons are often more successful at age 7 and up when children are able to maintain focus for longer periods of time, reading with more confidence, and have greater fine motor control.

Our group classes are designed for ages 6-9 years. We find that often when a student is 9 years of age they are ready for private lessons but may choose group because they love the interaction.

If the student is age 5, consider Kindermusik Level 5 where we learn to read and write notes on the staff, as well as play 3 instruments over the course of 2 years, including glockenspiel, dulcimer, and recorder. During year 2, there is also a bonus unit where we provide an introduction to violin. We offer Kindermusik Levels 1-4 for children under the age of 5. Learn more HERE.

How does your student thrive best?

Does your student enjoy making friends and being in a group?
If so, look closely at Group lesson offerings.

Or do they long for the 1:1 attention and focus that private lessons provide? If so, then consider enrolling in a Paid Trial Lesson to learn more.

How long are the lessons?

Private lessons are typically 30 minutes each week while students are in elementary school.
Group lessons are 50 minutes each week.

How large is the group?

Group lesson classes typically include 3-4 students in a class with the exception of Studio Singers, which can run with up to 9 students.

What is different about the weekly experience?

Private lessons create an opportunity to match pacing and repertoire to the student’s needs and interests. Teachers will start by selecting lesson books and pieces based on a student’s individual level.

Group lessons follow a set sequential curricula unique to each instrument that is designed for small group instruction. Often, we see how the peer group creates positive motivation to participate in class as well as to practice at home. The group lesson experience exposes students to ensemble development, steady beat, and ear training each week in class. It is all part of the process.

Is there a difference in tuition?

Group lesson tuition includes 50 minute classes that meet once a week. See the website HERE for group lesson tuition details.

Typically the monthly tuition for group lessons is less than private lessons. See the website HERE for private lesson tuition details. Choose the instrument you are interested in and scroll down to see tuition and availability.

The annual registration fee is $45 for all lesson registrations.

If enrolling in group lessons, the annual registration fee includes your curriculum books for the year.

What is the progression for each?

Private lesson students progress at their own pace over time. Lessons are customized to the student’s pace and interest. Progress is dependent on lesson attendance, time invested each week on consistent home practice, and performance participation.

Group lesson students have specific targets they work to meet each 8 weeks that are reasonable and low-pressure, but keep the group moving along. After the 1st year, we offer a second year of group instruction at the next level. By the spring of the 2nd year, we work to transition each student to private lessons.
