Becca Porter grew up in Youngstown, Ohio and enjoyed playing music from a young age. In her early years she sang in her church youth choir and learned piano, later started to learn the flute at age 9. Quickly Becca found a love for playing music and got involved in any musical activity she could find. Before graduating from high school, she performed with the Stambaugh Youth Band as a senior soloist and was the recipient of the Louis Armstrong Jazz Award.
In 2013, Becca received her Bachelor’s in Flute Performance from Youngstown State University where she studied with Dr. Kathryn Umble. During her time at YSU, she performed in multiple masterclasses where she had the privilege to work with Alberto Almarza, Christina Jennings, Jim Walker, Elizabeth Buck, Soo-Kyung Park and John Thorne. Becca was a member of the Wind Ensemble from 2009- 2013 and won principal flute 2012-2013. She performed twice at the OMEA Conference and can be heard on numerous naxos recordings.
In 2016, Becca returned to school to receive her Masters in Flute Performance from Duquesne University where she studied with Jennifer Steele of the Pittsburgh Orchestra. Becca was a member of Duquesne’s Wind Ensemble, Orchestra, Flute Choir and many small chamber ensembles. She was runner up in 2017 for the orchestra’s concerto competition. During her time at Duquesne, Becca focused on new, contemporary music and performed an all contemporary masters recital.
From 2009-2016 Becca had a thriving flute studio in Youngstown, Ohio. This is where her passion for teaching flourished. She has taught many different age ranges and group settings as well as marching band. Many of her students have gone on to win auditions and state competitions.
Outside of music, Becca enjoys spending time with her husband, son and two dogs. Some of her other hobbies include sailing, camping and the visual arts. Becca and her family are loving Pittsburgh and enjoy exploring the city.
