Nicholas Fagnilli is a composer, pianist and synthesist from Wilmington, Delaware. After learning music by Emerson Lake & Palmer, King Crimson, Weather Report and others at School of Rock, Nick received his Bachelor’s from Ithaca College, studying piano and composition as well as electroacoustic music, jazz, and harpsichord.
In addition to writing and performing his own music, Nick is also a professional engraver and editor of scores and spends time producing recordings of works by other young composers. Nick has written music for films, concert music, commercials, songwriters, small bands, and children’s choirs.
As a teacher and as an artist, Nick finds ample room for a plurality of styles and approaches to music making. He believes that music allows us to construct our own universes and discover our own meaningful truths that nourish our life and spirit, even through the simple act of listening.
For those interested in Music Composition Lessons with Nick, here are more details:
Composition lessons at Kathy’s Music will allow our students to forge new pathways to an understanding of music and of themselves. Learning to compose is an act of expanding and shifting the idea of what “listening” really truly means. When young musicians feel that their understanding of music is leading them to create their own pieces, the questions concerning where to even begin, what to listen for, what to think of first, can be overwhelming! But luckily, composition lessons are not one-size-fits-all.
Every student’s musical inclinations and curiosities are different, and composition lessons will allow the student to see the ways music functions in the big picture, develop their inner ear and musical imagination, and feel confident and even surprised at the work they are able to produce. Student composers will also understand that the Theory of Music is descriptive- not prescriptive- and understand that the practical matters of composing are not cut-and-dry rules.
Our students at Kathy’s Music are proof that teaching the “What” and “How” of Music is one matter, and now our students have the opportunity to address the “Why” in Music!
