We love Fall and the excitement of school and activities starting up again – another year to grow in knowledge, skills, and friendships! Back-to-School supply lists are a staple at this time of the year. Here is a “Back-To-Lessons” supply list to make sure you have everything you need when returning or starting private or group lessons this Fall (or whenever you happen to be starting)!
–Kathy’s Music Bag – If you are new to our Private or Group Lesson program, you will receive a lesson tote bag this year when you start lessons. It is an ideal way to keep supplies organized as you travel to and from lessons and between practice sessions at home. Need a new bag? You can pick one up this fall at the Welcome Desk. Just ask our Studio Concierge for assistance.
–Practice Space – This is your digital lesson assignment book. IMPORTANT: If you are new to lessons, you will receive an invitation to join our school on Practice Space and connect with your teacher. It’s important to wait to create your login AFTER your teacher sends the invitation to create an account with our school. Great news! Practice Space is now available as both a website online AND an App for your phone/tablet. Both group and private lesson students will be using this tool this year for assignments and practice resources.
-Instrument – With the exception of vocalists who are their own instruments, you will need access to a quality instrument. If you have questions about where to start, speak with your lesson teacher. They can help answer your questions and give suggestions on different options that will work for your specific situation.
–Method Books and Music – Each student is at a unique point on their musical journey and has a distinctive musical taste. Your teacher will let you know what method books and music you should order.
–Music Stand – Pianos and Keyboards have a stand built in, but other instrumentalists and vocalists will need a stand to hold their music when practicing at home.
–Metronome – Metronomes are a useful tool in aiding the development of a steady sense of beat and tempo. You can purchase a stand-alone metronome or use one of the metronome apps and websites which are available.
–Pencil and Highlighter – It is a good idea to always keep a pencil and highlighter nearby when practicing to mark your music, complete theory work, record practice, and keep track of any questions you want to ask your teacher during the next lesson.
–Device for Virtual Lessons – If you are taking lessons online, you’ll need a device that connects to the internet such as an ipad or laptop. NOTE: A phone is a bit small for seeing your instructor or music, so we recommend another device if available. Load the Zoom App on your device and be sure to use the latest version installed. We suggest updating the software each time an update is released.
Designated area for practice or for online lessons – Whether you are taking lessons from home OR practicing at home, it’s important to have a designated area that is the “music corner.” Keep your supplies organized there, including your instrument, music, and all those things listed above. Take time to decorate it and make it special so that you will look forward to spending time there 4-5 times a week for practice.
Of course, there are some additional materials needed that are unique to each instrument…
Guitar and Ukulele – Pick (Ask your teacher about what pick weight you need.) and Tuner
Strings – Shoulder Rest or Sponge, Cleaning Cloth, Rosin, and Tuner
Flutes – Cleaning Cloth and Rod and Tuner
Clarinets, Oboes, and Saxophones – Cleaning Cloth, Reeds (Ask your teacher about what reed thickness you should purchase.), and Cork Grease
Brass – Cleaning Cloth, Mouthpiece (Ask you teacher about size and depth.), Mouthpiece Brush and Snake Brush, Valve/Slide Oil, and Tuner
Voice – Mirror and Recording Device
If you have any questions about the materials above, don’t hesitate to ask your teacher. We are here to help you! May this year be filled with musical growth in knowledge, skills, and friendships creating community, confidence, collaboration, and joy.
