Now that you are enrolled for lessons, what happens next? You may be wondering what to expect at your first lesson. Below we’ve highlighted 3 things your student can look forward to on the first lesson day.
New Materials – To Boost Engagement!
Students will be introduced to our new Practice Space App. This app is easily accessible from a smart phone, tablet or laptop. This is where you student will find the weekly assignment as well as record practice time. Whether you take lessons in person or online, everyone will use this tool. Teachers can easily provide supplements like worksheets or training videos using Practice Space, so that everything you need can be found in one place. Every student will also receive a new Kathy’s Music Tote Bag for their music books or binder. If you are a returning student, be sure to bring your lesson books and a pencil so that you will have everything you need for a smooth start.
Goal Setting – Let’s Do This!
The first lesson is a great time think about goals for the year. Together with your teacher you can set repertoire, performance, practice, theory, and technique goals. Is there a piece you’ve been hoping to learn? Perhaps you were wanting to perform more this year. Would you love to find out more about improvisation and composition? Take these first few weeks to discuss these ideas with your teacher. We invite you to write your goals in your practice planner so you can keep your eye on the target. Of course, if an idea comes to your head later in the year, please let your teacher know. Goal setting is a continuous process. Reflecting on past accomplishments, milestones, and challenges can spark future objectives.
Music Making – Let’s Have Fun!
As to be expected in every lesson, there will be plenty of music making. Is there a piece you’ve been practicing this Summer? We can’t wait to hear it! We’ll also be diving right into some new material and dusting off any technical cobwebs that may have accumulated during the Summer. Is this your first lesson? Don’t worry – we can’t wait to introduce you to your instrument and some new music as well.
Questions are always welcome.
Curiosity is a good thing! The first lesson is an ideal time to ask questions about the learning process, the way we do things, practice tips, and expectations. In fact, any time is a great time to ask questions, whether you are a parent or a student. The more you know about what we offer or how to make the most of your investment in lessons, the more you can lean in and take advantage of opportunities for fun and learning. Your teacher and the staff at Kathy’s Music are committed to providing an excellent musical learning experience this year and every year. Please let us know how we can help.
We are looking forward to a year filled with growth, confidence building, community, and joyful music making!
