Parenting often seems
like one big guessing game. Well, there’s one circumstance in which
making a guess can improve your baby’s development – when you guess to make
sense of baby’s sounds. Guessing and verbalizing what you think baby is
saying will help baby to understand that he can communicate and be
understood. This will motivate him to continue to use his voice to
express himself. So, when baby squeals with delight, say “You like
playing that game; You want to do it again!” And when baby grunts with
effort you can say, “You’re trying to get that ball. It’s hard work
trying to crawl over to the ball.” Also, the more you encourage baby
to make a variety of vocal sounds, the more you will encourage her developing
voice for both expressive speaking and for accurate singing.
